Drácula ★★★

I don't blame anyone for jumping the gun and saying this is better than Browning's - it took me I don't even know how many viewings of the better-known version of this movie before I appreciated Browning's mastery of negative space and subtle menace - but it's just not true. There's a more baroque use of the camera that stands out 3 or 4 times, plus some more graphic details that for whatever reason didn't make it into the mainstream version, but the acting here is just so stilted that there's really no comparison. Still an inherently fascinating work, though.
