My first actual narrative feature film of the year is, for some reason, this. Renny does his level Finnish best to save this from its clear mid-franchise doldrums and in so doing makes what has to be one of the most visually striking slashers ever, even considering that the Elm Street movies always lend themselves to audacious special effects and camerawork owing to the dream demon premise. It's hard to imagine anyone ever being frightened by this but as a piece of MTV pop horror it holds its own, there are even a couple De Palma-style overhead camera setups, so yeah, a visual feast even if the plot and characters are mostly mush. Fuckin' A.
