Brutal look at the corruption of a man due to the horrors of the chain gang.

It's never even suggested that perhaps being framed for a crime was the beginning of Allen's pain. No, it is completely clear that the change begins when Allen is sentenced to time on a chain gang, where he experiences humiliation and abuse. Seeing Allen go from a trusting and loving son, one who is interested in meeting new people and has faith and hope in his passions to one who struggles to open himself up to anyone is tragic. During one of the final scenes of the film, when Allen blows up a bridge, I was struck by the tragedy of it all. Before the chain gang, he spent his lunch breaks at his factory job admiring a nearby bridge being built. By the end of the film, he has no regard for the one thing he's most passionate about. It's such a small moment in the film, but it encapsulates the tragedy and the justified anger of the story perfectly.
