I need to rewatch this 15352636 more times but my god Scorsese and Deniro what a goddamn dream team. Also goddamn Jodie Foster was superb even at such a young age. Taut, tense, disturbing and disquieting. (Warnings for violence, gore, racist language and violence, misogynistic language, and child sex work)
I absolutely loved this film. A masterful thriller that delivered knife-edge tension and a sense of entrapment and claustrophobia with riveting performances from all the leads. A homage to Rear Window, absolutely, which captures much of the time and themes of the original whilst also being completely new, fresh and very much it’s own story.
Utterly beguiling and compelling film which explores the liminal spaces and places that those who are on the margins during war occupy. Someone called it a “Kafkaesque Casablanca” and it really does feel like it. Loved the sense of timelessness in it - also shows just how little has changed in the last 70 years.
