My first film back in the cinema since last summer. Worth the wait.

Echoes of McCabe and Mrs Miller and Deadwood in showing how a community is formed, the central pairing being fundamentally gentle people who nonetheless don't seem out of place in the harsh frontier, skilled and resourceful but in a different way to the rugged trappers and captains of industry. One of the best onscreen portrayals of tenderness and closeness among men.

Not sure if this counts as an ACAB movie or not, but I’m going to take it.

Billy Wilder, man. One of the greatest simultaneous tributes to and takedowns of Hollywood. The cast is perfect, as is the script. A classic Wilder protagonist, who dreams big but not big enough to hide his failings. And the all-time record for actor/director stunt-casting.

Murphy's look to camera after the Duke brothers explain to him what bacon is ranks as one of the greatest moments in any 80s comedy.
