God damn it, another addition to the "almost great" filmography of Scott Cooper.

It's true that once again Cooper doesn't seem to be able to navigate theme very well in his work. Oh he knows what themes are and the power they can hold in relation to a piece of storytelling or placing it in conjunction to an otherwise detached piece of lore or history, but he just can't get them to coalesce into something actually meaningful or even coherent…

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

Look, I'm as weary of watching Benedict Cumberbatch play Neuroatypical characters as the rest of you, but he's really good here in a rather emotionally distressing role in what turns out to be a surprisingly tender and upsetting portrait of an artist who lived a very sad life when the broad strokes are painted.

I hate how much I enjoy this movie unconditionally despite all of its shortcomings and plodding sequences. It's not a perfect movie, or even a perfect high school movie, but god damn it's got charm and humour and heart enough to win you over again and again. I love it.

(Notes from a well overdue 2021 rewatch:

Heath Ledger doing the little twirl on the stairs as the big band kick in with Frankie Valli’s Can't Take My Eyes Off You… that’s all.

The final poem reading and Julia Stiles’ utterly sincere delivery ripped my heart into tiny bits.)
