    Coming Out

What a beautiful little slice of sunshine.

Godzilla has always been the perfect mirror reflection of humanity, and so if he can accept and do the best he can for his trans daughter, we should be able to as well. Coming Out single-handedly reaffirmed my love for stop-motion animation films, my respect for the creators behind them, and my faith in human kindness (somewhat).

Trans rights are human rights. Every month is Pride Month.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

He’s been having me since I was twelve.

Christ, and to think Twin Peaks was already a dark story. Fire Walk With Me, essentially neither a prequel nor a sequel (I screamed inside when Annie appeared for a short scene), is a story that bombards you with grief and empathy for this hurt, innocent character of Laura Palmer. Throughout the TV show, we’re given little hints and clues of Laura’s life behind the homecoming queen façade — her drug use,…

Panorama from Top of a Moving Train

You sometimes forget that Georges Méliès wasn’t always the cinematic magician, and there were times when he would simply do what others did with the camera and portray slices of life. Of course this doesn’t compare to the magical kingdoms and evil imps of his later works, but this movie is still perfect as a window (albeit a short one) into the tail end of the 19th century.

    The Boxer's Omen

Reason to hurry my ass and watch all them amazing Shaw Brothers films no. ?????. Also, mental note to myself to show my half-Buddhist mom this movie. She’s gonna love it or hate it, but I think since she hates gore, the odds are in the latter’s favor.

Christ — I mean, Buddha, how crazy is this movie? If ever you doubted the power of Buddhism, rigorous mental training, and the human nature of desire for revenge and survival, The Boxer’s…

    Love Affair

I rarely cry during movies, but if I’d been a more frequent crier … there’s no doubt I’d have blubbered all the way through the final act of Love Affair

Morality aside, this film benefits quite a lot from staying away from love conflicts and jealous bouts that so many lesser romance flicks depend on for drama. It’s light entertainment at its finest — a breezy movie that just flies by, with two enjoyable screen performances and a story that…

    Colonel Panics

You know what kills me? The fact that there’s a somewhat interesting story underneath all this drivel. All I can say about Colonel Panics is that I from what I’ve seen, the movie gets way over its head with what it thinks is intellectual and what actually is. Examinations on morality and misogyny/violence in virtual reality is par for the course in most VR tales of today, but this probably takes the cake in pure gore and unfiltered, indulgent horror.…
