Hooptober Part VIII Film #9
I about flipped my shit when I realized this film was sampled by Madlib. “THIS JUST A WARNIN’ SUCKA!!!” My god, I would love a remake of this starring Freddie Gibbs. The plot is really not all there, but Glynn Turman (who I fondly remember from The Wire as the ruthless Baltimore mayor) gives the most entertaining and incredible performance switching between straight laced Ike and the possessed spirit of a demented 40s pimp JD. Hard to care about JD’s desire for revenge when he’s such a violent, woman-hating scum bag, ruining Ike’s life in a wake a pimp terror. Even so, the performances make this a very worthwhile ride and you can just tell Turman is having a blast swapping between these roles. Louis Gossett Jr., Joan Pringle, and Fred Pinkard all shine nearly as bright too. Come for the extra helping of Blaxploitation exuberance and leave the thinking cap on the hook.
