"If I had a steak, I would fuck it..."
that was insane...After missing this at Cannes Film Festival and rewatching The Witch on Tuesday, I’ve really been itching to see what Robert Eggers was gonna do next. The films that Eggers makes come across as though they’ve been made by a seasoned veteran that’s mastered their craft over the course of several decades, and yet this is his second feature. The Lighthouse is everything I wanted it to be. It’s simultaneously deranged and hilarious. It feels heavily inspired by German Expressionist filmmaking and the literary works of Edgar Allen Poe, and yet it feels like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It feels plucked directly out of the time in which it takes place and it’s truly an absolute technical marvel in every aspect, in particular, holy fucking shit, the performances...
Anybody who's hung out with me at any point since May would know I’ve been pretty vocal about how much I’ve wanted Taron Egerton to get his just due for Rocketman, but I can’t in good conscience do that anymore. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe both give career defining performances in this. They are absolutely outstanding and if they don’t get all the recognition they deserve, then I will fucking riot.
