Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time ★★★★★

This was the perfect end for this series, one that highlights how scary the world is and how fucked up and depressing the world is, yet the ending was full pf hope as the film makes a major pivot from the original series by highlighting the beauty of the world and how while the world might be scary, it is also beautiful, and you have to experience some pain and learn to live with it in order to move on and enjoy your life.

The animation was stunning for the most part, some 3d cgi scenes did look really bad but honestly, it wasn’t a big deal as it barely lasted more than 3 seconds. The soundtrack was epic as always but much like the film, most of it were more uplifting tracks than battle tracks. The film spends a lot of time outside of battle, I estimate half of the movie is outside of battle while the other half is a mix of the usual psychological drama action mix that you expect from Evangelion. It definitely feels like a slow burn at the beginning but that was welcome, we barely ever get to see the characters live a daily life and I loved seeing the characters finally being able to be happy after 26 episodes, and 5 different movies of straight depression, it was a nice, welcome change of pace.

It was heartwarming to see the characters mature and learn how to live with their pain and move on with their lives, it’s fitting for the theme of Evangelion where real beauty is found in the real world, a message that is further told in one of the end credit songs - Beautiful World. The ending was fulfilling, almost bittersweet as it was a beautiful ending but I feel empty knowing this is the end for the franchise. Of course there are the manga, games and other spin-offs to experience but this is most likely the last update to the franchise, and that makes me feel empty, but I’m overjoyed that every character was able to find the happiness they deserve. I struggle to express how happy I am due to my lack of experience reviewing films but this film was honestly so fucking good, I loved it and I see myself coming back to this at any given time, it’s probably my favorite Evangelion film out of the series and the other 5 movies. This movie was a perfect ending.
goodbye, all of Evangelion
