    Double Indemnity

    ★★★★★

"Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money, and for a woman. I didn't get the money, and I didn't get the woman. Funny, isn't it?"

This is my 5,000th film. Thank you for helping me choose it, friends.

(It's also my 1,888th film review. But who's counting?)

Billy Wilder's classic film noir, the crime thriller that turned 75 last year, Double Indemnity remained until today one of the most glaring omissions in my list of watched movies, one…

"I'm sure something's going to happen today."

    How does one review Sátántangó?

Carefully, methodically. Don't you dare try to watch another movie the same day. Preferably on a dreary day. By please not stealing this film; buy the new Blu-ray restoration. With a sleepy cat on your lap. (No, he didn't watch that one scene.)

Also, maybe with a stiff drink.

I haven't had a drink in nine years. Sátántangó got me to do that again. Also, the Super Bowl,…

    Curtain Up!

"I think I do have powers that people don't know about."

A very sweet film about breaking through stereotypes is the next entry as part of my Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, as directors Kelly Ng and Hui Tong bring the inspiring story to viewers of the theater club of PS 124 in New York City's Chinatown, an entirely Asian-American cast of children performing a truncated version of the musical Frozen. A kids-eye view of audition, production, rehearsal,…

    Through the Night

"I just do what I can."

The verité documentary Through the Night now has a wider release at what feels like a pertinent time, as America debates the parts of a congressional "infrastructure bill" which contains a particular focus on childcare. Is investing in childcare "infrastructure"? If it contributes to how women can also be working mothers, many say yes. Loira Limbal's excellent film examines the emotional toll on families facing choices about work and family, focusing on a 24-hour…

    Frozen II

The screen glows white in the theatre tonight
Not a cellphone to be seen
    A film devoid of imagination
And it needs to be in quarantine

My face is scowling like a raging storm inside
Couldn't make it good, heaven knows they tried

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good film Frozen I was to me
Raw deal, this reel, don't let them know
    Well, now they know

Don't you go, don't you go
    Can't say…

    Gemini Man

Now, this is a movie all about how
Will Smith got cloned by a man of renown.
And I'd like to take a minute, just sit with me,
I'll tell you how he became de-aged in a film by Ang Lee.

In west of some laboratory, born and raised,
In a test tube was where he spent most of his days.
Chillin' out, maxin', assassinatin' a fool,
And all shootin' some people to graduate from school,
    When a couple of…
