Body and Soul

Body and Soul ★★★

Goddamn faux-religious leaders poisoning already marginalized communities from the inside...

Although I found Oscar Micheux’s Body and Soul pretty taxing to get through, it’s hard to deny the film’s bravery given the social and historical context at the time of its release. Ultimately, I found the plot very contrived and not nearly compelling enough, but some interesting editing choices and undeniably powerful imagery make it memorable and impressive.
