Come to Daddy

Come to Daddy ★★★★

I love Elijah Wood so much. For one, he’s just so cute with those gigantic blue eyes and for two, he starred in one of the biggest blockbuster movie series of all time and then was like “we shan’t be doing that again shall we” and everything he’s done lately has just been delightfully weird and wonderful. This may be my favorite role oh his yet even if it is with the worst haircut I’ve ever seen…maybe on anybody.

All I knew about this going in was that it was about a guy reuniting with his estranged father and that’s really all you need to know. I suppose you could figure out what was happening if you thought about it enough, but I had no idea where it was going at almost any point and I love a movie that successfully makes you so invested in what’s happening in moment that you just don’t have a fucking clue as to what’s coming next. The first half is a great talent display with Stephen McHattie and Elijah Wood arguing almost Virginia Woolf style and you’re wondering if that’s going to be the whole movie and they’re both so good I probably would have been ok with that, but then it all takes a super sharp turn and from then on it’s a wonderful wild ride with just the right amount of bizarre events and general insanity.

I was going to give this 3.5, but when it ended and I thought about it a few minutes I really appreciated the restraint Ant Timpson uses to keep that black humor edge from rolling into sheer cringey obscene comedy. Staying at just the right level of dark throughout deserves an extra half star because it would have been so easy to present all this twisted material  with a giant wink instead of the straight face we luckily end up getting.
