While The French Dispatch looks like it could unseat this, for now, I think this is Wes Anderson’s masterpiece. Not my favorite, but his best. He’s honed his craft so well, and this movie flows like a fine wine. Going back and forth between aspect ratios/timelines never feels jarring. Everyone is perfectly cast (as is usually the case with his movies) and, most importantly, it’s so incredibly funny. I don’t think Anderson gets enough credit for how funny his movies are.
The new criterion blu-ray, like all of his movies, was well worth the double dip. It looks gorgeous.
