Menace II Society

Menace II Society ★★★★★

A phenomenal debut by the Hughes Brothers!

So glad I finally saw this and that I waited until the 4K was available. This disc just songs! Those colors pop and the soundtrack is incredibly immersive. This film first popped on my radar, like many of my generation, when San Andreas released in 2004. Can't believe it took me so long to see it.

The Hughes Brothers are more than capable in their first feature, going wild with their camera and getting some terrific performances from the mostly young cast. Larenz Tate is terrifying as "bad influence" O-Dog and first-timer Tyrin Turner knocks it out of the park as Caine. He may be the lead here but this definitely feels more of an ensemble piece, a devastating slice of life.

Absolutely loved this and I wouldn't be surprised if it goes into regular rotation with other like-minded classics like Goodfellas.
