The Game

The Game ★★★★

"I am extremely fragile right now."
- Nicholas Van Orton

Michael Douglas. Now there a guy I've not seen enough of lately. He's an incredibly underappreciated actor if you ask me.

So, The Game then. Nestled neatly between Se7en and Fight Club, this was a time when David Fincher was really on a roll. In some ways it reminded me of the latest international circus, the US election or just 2020 in general.

Nick starts his day like any other, minding his own business as a wealthy businessman doing the things that wealthy businessmen do. In steps his brother with a surprise birthday present - an 'experience' voucher to 'The Game' and from this moment, things go sideways quickly for Nick, and it's gonna be a while before he can enjoy a champagne lunch again.

Douglas is really good in this, and is supported by solid performances from Sean Penn and Deborah Kara Unger. Greed is indeed, good.
