    1917

    ★★★★½

    "1917" is quite a cinematic experience - a filmmaker's wet dream.

Sam Mendes has made porn for film students with this war epic which is incredibly well-made and quite a rollercoaster ride. The film doesn't have quite as much ambition in the storytelling aspect as the script is bogged down by some too many "perfectly timed" moments.

"1917" is about two soldiers who must cross over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their…

    Shadow of a Doubt

    ★★★★★

Alfred Hitchcock has professed "Shadow of a Doubt" is his favourite film and for good reason. The psychological cat-and-mouse between uncle and niece played superbly by Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright is a masterpiece.

When young Charlie and her family get a visit from her favourite uncle - also named Charlie, she is ecstatic. But his charm can't stop her from slowly realising that there's something suspicious, and potentially murderous, about him.

Hitchcock paces the film quite cleverly ... a…

    Chicago

    ★★★★½

A scathing commentary on celebrity and the criminal system told via an array of song-and-dance numbers, "Chicago" is an entertaining, energetic delight that doesn't shy away from its grander messages.

Adapted from Bob Fosse's celebrated Broadway musical, the film cuts back on Fosse's darker edges and injects colorful energy in its stead. Director Rob Marshall's decision to glitter up the darkness gives "Chicago" a more cinematic feel. The casting of bonafide movie stars Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere vs more accomplished Broadway singers and dancers also help in the transfer from stage to screen.

    Bravo!

    Black Widow

    ★★★★

A spy flick with a big touch of Marvel is a great idea and "Black Widow" for the most part achieves its ambition. The biggest problem with the film is the protagonist who still by the movie's end still doesn't feel like a complete character.

Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow has long been the one member of the Avengers who never seemed to gel on who she really was. Despite the simplicity of her background - she's a turned Russian…

    Ready or Not

    ★★★½

"Ready or Not" is a twisted ride of a horror flick.

A newlywed becomes hunted by her spouse's family as part of their wedding night ritual. The premise is as wild as it sounds and the final execution with flairs of comedy and gross-out horror is very well done.

Not perfect but macabre and fun.

Pedro Almodovar has never shied away from showing raw emotion in his film. His characters tend to lay bare for all to experience warts and all. But this is the first time that he uses himself as the muse for his character and he exposes himself the same way he exposes his best characters.

With Antonio Banderas, the closest thing he has to a male muse for his films, he has found the perfect person to personify Salvador Mallo. Banderas…
