    "All this death for nothing."

Gotta respect a guy like Jesse V. Johnson who reverse engineered an entire movie out of a financier wanting to write off the purchase of a World War II era Jeep as a budgetary expense. Downright admirable how much this manages to milk out of its tiny budget, finding a canny and clever way to do a period thriller on a budget. Also very fun turns from Nina Bergman, Daniel Bernhardt and JvJ's boi Louis Mandylor, and so so so much glorious practical violence/blood squibs. AVENGEMENT is probably still my favorite JvJ but this is probably second.

    "Why you pushin' me?"

Basically one clumsy final monologue from being a perfect thriller. Weaves in its themes about the poor treatment of veterans and police corruption in a way that feels so organic that it's actually kind of disarming. A thrilling, exciting action film for adults, amazing that a movie this characterful (not just for Rambo, but also Trautman and the cops, the economy with which it establishes Teasle's pride at being a well-to-do small town sheriff is remarkable) and thoughtful spawned one of the ultimate meathead franchises.

"You're an idiot, but you're MY idiot."

Very amusing performances (Leto as the most cartoonish version of Fredo ever is a hoot, Pacino is Pacino, Gaga is basically playing Lady Macbeth crossed with Cruella de Vil but also Italian, Jeremy Irons is somehow only the fourth hammiest actor despite being Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek is a witch?????), but this is unfortunately one of those mid-tier Ridley movies where the script only feels about halfway to where it needs to be…

"To not know your place in this world, to not know why you're here. That's.... that's just an awful feeling."

...is this the actual best superhero movie? I've always liked it, but something about the 4K presentation and Night's immaculately composed images within kicked it to the next level for me. Here Night feels like one of the few filmmakers who actually attempted to recreate the visual language of comic books in live action, and not in the "Ang Lee…
