Absolutely adorable, although it ends so abruptly that I kinda felt cheated. I wanted MORE, dammit! The chemistry between the two leads is fantastic without ever tipping into full-on romantic/sexual chemistry, and I love that - NORMALIZE PEOPLE BECOMING FRIENDS INSTEAD OF SLEEPING TOGETHER - but at the same time it leaves so much open at the end that it made me feel like there was a whole other act left on the cutting room floor.

Ed Helms carrying a giant floppy teddy bear IS MY SEXUALITY.

"You don't want this, Martin. But I'm rooting for you anyway."

    Even better on rewatch.

Like it or not, the play is still relevant, as gay men continue to struggle with these issues (even if we do have more support to see us through). Mantello's smart, sensitive direction makes the film more incisive than a play by using the intimacy the camera offers in very impactful ways. All the performers are great, even if some of their chosen styles don't always mesh well together.

I am OBSESSED with how writer-director Florian Zeller has adapted his own play so well, using stage conventions in completely different ways to achieve similar ends on film. This absolutely devastating mind-fuck of a film puts us so thoroughly in the mind of its protagonist - a never-better Anthony Hopkins - that it drags you forward kicking and screaming, with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy. Colman makes it so incredibly easy to empathize with her that you feel both sides of the story, but it is Hopkins's final moments that will haunt you long after the film is over.
