Halloween III: Season of the Witch

A fine premise in and of itself, and say what you will about the FRIDAY THE 13TH and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET franchises, but at least every one of those films featured Jason and Freddy. This is an odd outlier.

Oddly enough, I had a similar reaction to this as I did MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. Both films that were obviously exquisitely crafted, but are also more than a bit much and become utterly exhausting by the end.

I've seen people echo the sentiment "Chantal Akerman was only 24 years old when she made JEANNE DIELMAN" several times in regard to the craft of this film, and now that I've finally seen it what's even more astonishing (and utterly harrowing) than that is how a 24-year old person would already have developed such a hopelessly bleak worldview. We all get there, eventually, as long as we don't fill our heads with fairy tales, or religion, or other sources…

I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews for what might be Larry Cohen's best film. Sure, it's not available in a 4K ultra HD format at this point, but especially for being a product of the early '70s this is some seriously subversive filmmaking. Cohen was on the right side of history all along, as evidenced in his debut, and no more obviously pronounced than this. Tremendous.

This is incredibly well acted and astonishingly poorly filmed. Somewhere buried in here is a great film with coherent themes, but if you're an aspiring director and your name's not Shane Carruth you should really, *really* shy away from the whole parallel universe idea.

Only a madman would watch this and give Sam Esmail his own show after having seen it. Jesus.

Perhaps this was obvious to everyone but me from the onset, however - this is so blatantly, clearly, transparently nothing more than a promotional vehicle for Childish Gambino's music that it really has no reason to exist aside from that. It was released at midnight last night/this morning, where one could theoretically go from streaming Glover's Coachella performance straight into watching this "movie." Even at a mere running time of 55 minutes, this substance-less, meaning-less, plot-less thing feels like a…
