Elizabeth Taylor casually calling out tax breaks for the oil industry and treating her Mexican neighbors with respect...love this socialist film.

A sense of ongoingness can be felt nowhere better than in In the Same Breath, Wang’s remarkable document of the global coronavirus pandemic that we continue to endure. It’s the rare case in which the distance between viewer and subject is removed, as each audience member’s experience of the film is inevitably affected by their own traumas and concerns of the past year.

Maybe my favorite film of NYFF so far. Whether it was intentional or not, feels like the truest tribute to Akerman I’ve ever witnessed. And falls into my favorite category of movies: women wandering alone in unfamiliar locations.

This movie captures the way I felt when I moved to rural America for college and was suddenly surrounded by S P A C E —whether it was a hayfield or a Walmart. It also captures the difficulty of being a pedestrian in these places...valid!
