    An excellent period drama. The accents are ropey but Paulette Goddard is brilliant and Leisen's direction is superb. The entire sequence of the Death of the Duke is one of the most original things in any movie in the 1940s.

    A movie that quite obviously Stanley Kubrick was extremely familiar with. This is basically a prequel to BARRY LYNDON explaining the milieu's origin story, and there's a sequence that quite obviously foreshadows Eyes Wide Shut.

    There are two rhyming moments in Terrorizers.

    1) A photographer creates a photograph mural of blown-up sections of a girl's face (in fact the page-art for the Letterboxed page) and hangs it on his wall. We see wind blow in the room and flutter all the photos at once so that sections of the face blow up and down and shake. It's genuinely mesmerizing and beautiful.

    2) Another is when we see an array of monitors of a TV interview…

    Edward Yang's Mahjong is a defining movie about the 90s and the encroaching milennium with all its fears and dread. This is a movie that explodes the concepts of utopias and dystopias. This is at heart an Altmanesque mosaic of Taipei in the mid-90s, but each mosaic is compiled of different genres. So one tile of the mosaic is basically a coming of age Boy-meets-Girl story a la Leos Carax, another part is a gangster movie that owes something to…
