Every few years it seems that the collective internet takes a movie, normally one with a lot of nostalgia associated with it and runs with it. Making memes, in jokes and generally obsessing over it, the last few years has seen a rise in popularity of ‘Bee Movie’ on the internet, where even those who haven’t seen it are probably aware of it and know a lot of the jokes. I’ve seen the film a few times but never with a maturer eye that I have now, so enough context.
Bee Movie is a pretty clever movie that slips up on a lot of its themes and never explores them all fully. There is a heck of a lot going on, and while all of these are creative and fun ideas none of them are really given the time to allow them to flourish. BM deals with finding your place in society, inter species relationships, taking honey makers to court, how we look after the planet and eventually believe it or not, saving the world. All these ideas are explored and it’s impressive that a dreamworks film would have the stones to attempt such a thing but I would have preferred these ideas to be more fleshed out.
Bee Movie is a funny movie, and is very clever but a bit more focused and a tighter script would have served it better.
