I been thinking about this movie quite a bit lately and honestly it's an anomaly of fuzzy-quality surrealist nightmare comedy. Packed to the brim with killer (literally) video effects, jokes that made me guffaw, and the typical heightened gore of Troma fare (as with their other films, 80% of the budget musta went to the bloodbath sections). Surprisingly there is a good chunk of memorable characters and scenes; I especially love the part with the dude trippin' nuts on LSD…
This was quite the oddity. By far the most existential samurai movie I have seen. Half the movie is shown in almost a vignette-like fashion with funny little philosophical quips which are then juxtaposed by Izo's killing of many humans. There is so much blood shed god damn. This goes on for a while and it is arguably dragging but I still enjoyed the film and what it was going for. Could have been much better
Also Takeshi Kitano is in it that's pretty cool
Pretty good movie up until the middle-ish, then it just drags on way too long (should've only been 90 minutes), and the scenes just get fucking disgusting. This is the first film I've seen of Mr. Refn, and I can already tell this is him at his worst.
P.S. the score was quite good though, I enjoyed it
