This is an ambitious project from Ridley Scott, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck writing and acting together for the first time since Good Will Hunting. Based on an actual event, this is a medieval story of a trial by combat to settle a point of honour, told from the perspectives of the three main participants in Rashomon style chapters. Damon is angry, wronged husband, Adam Driver the accused and Jodie Comer the wife/victim. The film is heavily influenced by…

There are any number of ways to take this movie, possibly as a super-hero origin story, a modern-day morality tale, or even a polish Desperate Housewives. I just enjoyed the experience of letting it wash over me as a series of interconnected windows into the lives encountered by travelling masseur Zenia, played with great screen presence and an appropriate air of mystery by Alec Utgoff.

Not all the questions set up seem to be answered, but there are a fair…

This is a touching love story set against a pandemic which causes memory loss. As such it calls into mind other films whose plots are driven by amnesia - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Memento and The Father spring to mind as being other members of this sub-genre. Spotless Mind is perhaps the closest tonally, but there the memory erasure is done deliberately; in Little Fish the characters are desperate to avoid it and don’t recognise it when it…

This a pretty standard noir story, directed with flourish by Otto Preminger. The setup is nothing new, lone drifter arrives in small American town and falls for femme fatale local waitress but needs to raise cash to woo her, so turns to a local heiress whom he plans to seduce, marry and divorce, stealing her savings along the way. Sounds simplicity itself, but things soon get out of hand and the film takes a few interesting turns as the drifter,…

If you listen to the television here in the UK it would appear the very future of cinema is riding on the success of this, the latest James Bond film. So, the first thing to say is that this is definitely worth checking out, and on the biggest screen you can get to. In my case, this was the York Cineworld IMAX and ticket sales seemed solid, at least for this first weekend.

Is it the best Bond film ever?…

The last episode of The Sopranos was broadcast back in 2007 so this prequel has been a long time coming. I wanted to like it more than I did because I was a fan of the TV Series back in the day, but my memory of the myriad cast of characters and their relationships is hazy at best. You don’t need to have seen The Sopranos to follow this film, it might even be an advantage as you won’t be…
