The Little Things

The Little Things provided one of the more entertaining viewings of 2021 for me. And all because of its incompetence. Front to back, this is total garbage. A mess of cop clichés, sloppy writing, and an aesthetic that feels like Amazon Prime rather than HBO. Denzel Washington is asleep at the wheel, so muted and bored in his delivery that calling the role "phoned in" doesn't quite capture it. Jared Leto is unhinged doing his usual MeThOd AcToR routine, and it weirdly works? Don't get me wrong, it's hilarious and terrible, but at least it seems like he's cognizant of the fact that The Little Things is fodder to be lost forever in the void of streaming. And then there's Rami Malek with one of the worst performances in recent memory, somehow one-upping his Costume Contest Freddie Mercury. Every choice he makes in this movie is the wrong one. Weird gestures and strange tangents at least offer a bizarre energy to the predictable narrative, but putting these three actors in a picture together was a godawful decision.

When we ask for more films in the vein of 90s thrillers, this is not what we mean.
