Neill Shaughness’s review published on Letterboxd:
Not my favorite Guillermo del Toro, but I'm glad he got an oscar for something.
My biggest concern was that the love story would be unearned. Often in the forbidden romance subgenre the expression of love is a higher priority than the evolution of it, but my concerns were unfounded. The musical number is a bold touch and probably the moment Del Toro won over the Academy. Michael Shannon was amazing as he always is, but is not the scariest part of the film. The scariest part is when she intentionally floods her bathroom all the way to the ceiling. As a life long renter I've never experienced more anxiety in a film.
