selomeee’s review published on Letterboxd:
found the pacing to be clunky and the screenplay to be super heavy handed. ansel elgort doesn’t make sense for the role, he wasn’t very good till the last 30-45 min. some of the editing was awkward. the choreography paled in comparison to jerome robbins’. also i was really excited to see rita moreno stand in for doc, but honestly didn’t love what they did with her character. overall, none of it resonated with me emotionally. i did not expect to leave with dry eyes! i’m super disappointed!
there were two highlights. one, rachel zegler was lovely. two, “cool” was really really well done, the only change from the original film that i found creative/effective.
EDIT: lemme also say that ariana debose as anita and mike faist as riff were wonderful!
