    An Elephant Sitting Still

    TW//self-harm, attempted suicide

There's a group of four scars on my right leg. I've cut myself all over my body, but those four are the deepest, and those are the ones that aren't leaving.

I think it was in seventh grade I realized something was wrong. There was a feeling that everything was falling apart even though nothing was. It was always lurking in the back of my mind, but that year it lept out at me and suddenly everything…

  • Violent

I remember a Summer morning in Canada where I had gone to visit my grandparents. I've never been one for fishing, but that morning I decided to go fishing with my grandpa. I remember standing there on a rickety wooden pier, rod in my hand, sunrise dancing on the waves, orange-kissed water lapping at the pier. I stood there for hours with him, barely talking, just casting and reeling in, casting and reeling in. The rhythm of the casting mimicked…

I hold two slightly contradictory viewpoints on this film: first, this is a thoroughly compelling insight into an awful human being, and second, this film does and says nothing of any real import or significance.

To the former, I believe that Thewlis's character is explored to an extraordinary degree, accompanied by a truly sublime performance. The man exudes sleaze, filth, confusion, and hollowness. I think what intrigued me the most was how insubstantial everything he said and did was;…

    Gamera, the Giant Monster

Pretty much everything I wanted to be honest. It’s a fun romp with good pacing and a dope design for Gamera. I love this space turtle dude truly incredible fella. Not really much to say because this isn’t a weighty flick, but I think his relationship with Toshio was pretty wholesome and added a cute layer to it. The action is definitely B-movie type shit and not really realistic but that adds to the charm of it. Yeah there ya go space turtle > lizard guy is my verdict here and I really dug this movie.

Cycles. Everything in the world seems to be a circle; it's even ingrained into the language of life itself -- "the circle of life". Everything has a beginning and an end, but its beginning and end are determined by those before it. The people around us; our friends, parents, lovers shape who we are. We hope to choose our own path, but our environment is what defines us so much of the time.

    Kaori. Her life is…

    A Brighter Summer Day

    100/100(was a 99/100)

The opening text of the film describes the historical context in the simplest terms possible; in 1949, there was a mass migration to Taiwan from China. The specifics surrounding that are obviously far more complex, but the description serves to set the stage for the film. The context is this: due to that migration, there was a lack of any cohesive cultural identity. That in turn reflected on the individuals -- now thrown into an entirely new…
