This is director Emerald Fennell's debut film that premiered at Sundance last year, and it is a promising debut! It is ultra stylized and exciting to watch, and the story takes many dark and unexpected turns. The final half hour is shocking and deprived, and really affected me deeply. This film doesn't stay 'safe', it tackles a huge and controversial topic that has been swept under the rug for far too long, and it completely gut punches you with the ugly reality of the situation. This social issue needs to stop and has to be taken seriously!
My only real complaint is the tonal imbalance throughout the film - given it is such a dark and twisted subject, certain scenes felt out of place when it tried to come across as a cutesy comedy. But those moments were few and far between and can at the end of the day be forgiven given this film is trying to reach a wider audience without being too nihilistic.
All in all, this was a fresh and relevant take on the revenge sub-genre, and I was engaged and affected by the overall product. Definitely a director to look out for going into the future!
