    There's a thin line between realism and sadism. I think Loach stays on the right side, but that was a very risky mov(i)e. His characters were punished in a way that almost reminded me of Michael Haneke, but you always get the sense that the punisher is not the director. It's life itself.

    I love how Vidor convince us the protagonist of this capitalist fable is unselfish, even though she's the biggest gold-digger in the room. The motivation for her sacrifice is to make her daughter rich, and she must disappear for it to happen. She won't get the money, but money must win, and Vidor films this like a Mizoguchi suicide. Cruel, but breathtaking! That ending, Jesus, is the best final close-up I see since I was a teen and watched a VHS copy of Queen Christina.n
