Favorite Movies That Barely Have a Plot

Plot, shmot! When a filmmaker achieves that perfect balance between theme and character and a strong vision, any semblance of actual plot can sometimes feel irrelevant, distracting, or even counterproductive. Here's some of my quirky favorites that succeed with only the barest hint of a story, or by throwing out typical narratives altogether in favor of something better and more meaningful.

Arranged by order of release date and not NEARLY comprehensive. I'll be adding to this as I go along:

  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail
  • A Christmas Story
  • Frances Ha
  • Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Locke
  • John Wick
  • What We Do in the Shadows
  • Hail, Caesar!
  • American Honey
  • 20th Century Women
  • Paterson
  • The Florida Project
  • Call Me by Your Name
