So I came home late, fairly tipsy, got into bed, was listening to Fear of Music and I just chucked this on for some reason. Ten minutes in, I remembered Philip Glass did the score so I knew I had to restart it and watch it properly.
Koyaanisqatsi examines the peaceful nature and busy chaos of the world we live in. The highs and lows of Glass’ score is perfect as he experiments with the sound in glorious tandem with the magnificent visuals. Reggio plays with speed and other techniques which makes for a well structured beautiful hypnotising trip showing humanity’s departure from nature. Whilst on surface level that’s what is going on but Koyaanisqatsi can mean whatever you want it to mean. It’s one of those films where it simply shows our world and attempts to provoke something within the viewer. It’s a film that is more based on feeling than understanding. Like it’s probably best experienced in a dark room where you just give yourself over to it.
Those first 10 minutes listening to Fear of Music was so damn mesmerisingly transcendent though that I instantly restarted it, muted it and just listened to Talking Heads for the whole runtime. A weird part of me felt like I’d just stumbled across this amazing phenomenon because of how perfectly it fit.
I HIGHLY recommend trying that out if you are a Heads fan AFTER you’ve watched and appreciated the beauty of Koyaanisqatsi.
