This is the end. Not for James Bond but the Daniel Craig era, one that less redefined 007 but more repositioned the franchise to its rightful place as the platinum standard for prestige action cinema. After the increasingly silly Brosnan films that seemed out of date come the War on Terror and the changing tenor of spy thrillers that came along in its wake, particularly the Jason Bourne movies, it was clear that Bond had to change with the times.…

Pulgasari is probably the most widely known North Korean film, which I admit might not be saying much, that's probably like talking about Moldova's most famous pop act, but here we are. The story of its making, whereby agents of Kim Jong-il kidnapped Shin Sang-ok, a famous South Korean film director and imprisoned him and his wife in a re-education camp for several years before forcing him at literal gunpoint to make movies for the state before they finally escaped…

    Jawbreaker

    ★★½

Jawbreaker has aspirations to be Heathers (1989) for the 1990s but while ambition is almost always a good thing, you also need to execute, and this film can't follow through on its intriguing setup and progressively becomes less interesting as it works its way to a very predictable conclusion. Of course a lot of movies have climaxes/endings that aren't in any way surprising but work because they deliver emotional satisfaction. There's some of that here, but if you're going to…

I quite enjoyed Jocelyn Moorehouse's offbeat character piece/genre deconstruction, The Dressmaker (2015), and her debut feature Proof is cut from a very similar cloth. This is a sort of psychological drama/buddy movie/very dry comedy that this country excels at. However that being said, while this is a film that's steeped in Melbourne from the leafy boulevards of Kew to an Italian restaurant on Lygon Street, to the Arts Centre to the Botanic Gardens (although they don't actually allow dogs there)…

While cinema is art and therefore there is no exact formula for either success or failure, John Frankenheimer's The Train nails so many aspects of this art form that it effortlessly qualifies as an almost perfect movie. It possess an easily comprehensible and linear story, while at the same time it tackles difficult subject matter that offers only moral ambiguity rather than your usual cliches and platitudes. It is…

An alternative history warning about what could have happened had The Battle of Britain gone the other way and Operation Sea Lion been successful in 1940, resulting in Nazi Germany invading Britain. This was actually a more real possibility than many believe today, with only a strategic miscalculation by Luftwaffe chief Hermann Goering to switch his bombing raids from RAF airfields to major cities, thus giving the Royal Air Force time to recover its strength and continue the fight. This…
