Visually this is without a doubt the best anime I have seen (so far). It's so incredibly psychedelic but effortlessly so, allowing for moments that are truly breathtaking. However it hugely lacks characterisation. Kaneda and Tetsuo are supposedly best friends and this is a huge driver to the plot yet I felt little to no connection between them, the same goes for Kaori and Tetsuo. This film is the perfect remedy for modern life and romance. The viewer joins Marianne in capturing every glimpse of Héloïse, it is through this act of intense looking that you realise your image of someone is not at all about what they look like but of what you feel about them. You understand that great art, like life itself, cannot be made purely through empirical observation.
The lack of soundtrack is in my opinion what makes this film incredible.…
