Ensemble for Somnambulists

Ensemble for Somnambulists

Continuing her phase of pure choreography, Ensemble for Somnambulists' main progression from the previous Maya Deren film, Meditation on Violence, is that here images are transformed into negative images and this inevitably makes the film more stylized as well as giving it a more poetic feel, and it seems like this film is probably the inspiration for Norman McLaren's Pas de Deux. Also, as a result of the negative image, the emphasis that was placed on male body in Deren's past few films is significantly undermined here.
