    After a decade of building and reworking his regular formula of isolation, alienation, and loneliness, Tsai Ming-liang had begun to move away - straying further with his short work and leaning into non-narrative experimentation - what can now be seen as the turning point of his career.

    This transition is seen somewhat in The Skywalk is Gone (2002), though especially in Madame Butterfly (2009) - whose confident, minimalist sensibilities Ming-liang was to adopt in his future work.

    Pretty fun, some crazy images and a good sense of atmosphere, but the bulk of the film hinges on a reveal that it all but yells at you 5 minutes in.

    For the most part feels like a modernized Rosemary's Baby (1968), spending the majority of the film in a paranoid state of confusion and gaslighting, almost mirroring it beat for beat. It's overly similar, or at least waits too long before deviating into its own ideas.
