My favorite "Coen Brothers" movie, although I'm not sure I could have made it through the earlier bits without a group pulling me through the awkwardness. And this is why it pays to be nice to people!
This movie is way less about HAL, and I had way more sympathy for "him," than I had ever imagined based on what I had heard about this movie before finishing it. (I had seen the first 45 minutes when I was in junior high or early in high school.)
I really liked how much slower the pace is than in your typical science fiction movie. Distances in space are MASSIVE. I imagine that space travel is extremely boring, especially…
Reading that this film influenced Sofia Coppola's work on The Virgin Suicides makes a lot of sense. I kind of glazed over its more famous themes while finding a couple of subtle points about class within it. (Note: The dubbing is midly distracting.) I wonder how this film might be subtly made differently today.
