The Witch is genuinely evil, and so, genuinely frightening. In my opinion this is for three reasons.
Firstly the film's sophisticated execution - the period and the mood is painted almost immaculately. The dialogue and language is surprisingly convincingly acted, my only qualm being, I wish that I could have understood the heavy accents. Yet this only added to the the frighteningly alien quality of the film.
Secondly there is an underlying Bergman-esque claustrophobia and hysteria - a very human…
