Birth Year Challenge – The Sequel (02/84)

WHY WINGS OF DESIRE ISN'T THE MASTERPIECE IT DESERVED TO BE AND WHY CITY OF ANGELS IS WAY BETTER THAN IT HAS ANY RIGHT TO BE - Part 1

Before you ask: "What madness is this?" - just bear with me. There's a logic to my madness.

WINGS OF DESIRE sets the scene nicely with a long, sweeping sequence, in which we get to fly above and glide through the streets, buildings, and…

Filmmaking 1.01: To sustain the necessary suspension of disbelief, never treat your protagonists more seriously than the story demands. If you do, do it ironically, or else it'll fall apart.

While Roseanne Liang does show some serious directing skills - it's super slick and she has a great eye for action setpieces, she still needs to work some more on her storytelling skills (since she claims to have rewritten his screenplay to her and Chloë's liking, it can't all be…

Birth Year Challenge – The Sequel (07/84)

THREE COLORS: WHITE loses the gravity of BLUE and opts instead for some eastern European quirkiness. Though, since blue, white, and red are the colors of the french flag, I don't really get why this second installment doesn't tell another France-focused tale. But the main guy's center of attention is his estranged French ex-wife, so I guess that has to be enough?... I also don't know what really his end goal was, but it was such an enjoyable ride that I don't mind that remaining a mystery. It even kind of makes it sweeter.

An extra half a star for Carla Gugino, who made me care for a moment in an otherwise disappointing showcase of how not to make a movie. I expected better from the guy who directed the amazing BIG BAD WOLVES. Looks gorgeous, though.

ONE CUT OF THE DEAD is basically a 37 minutes long one-take zombie film, followed by the most epic post-credit sequence ever. 😉

Wow! Even though I heard all the praises, this still managed to surpass my expectations. Director Shin‘ichirô Ueda totally deserves all the praise and success he’s receiving. With this, he created a truly inspiring film about the passion of a filmmaker and what he can achieve if he keeps his passion going. With a premise as simple…

If Alejandro Jodorowski and Gaspar Noé made a baby, they'd probably call it 'Mandy'.
