Got an extra half star because Kate Winslet almost watched Punch-Drunk Love.
Argo, starring Ben Affleck, is one of this years best. Combining the right amount of drama and comedy (mostly in the beginning), this film successfully adds to Affleck's growing career as a director. Taking place during 1979 Iran hostage crisis, Argo never takes its foot off the peddle, always reminding you of the stakes and the background of the situation. More than a just a normal thriller, it takes you through different aspects of this rescue mission and allows different genres to peak in and add to this film, making it well rounded and entertaining.
Adapted from the long-running comic series, Dredd stars Karl Urban as the titular character and Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson, his rookie partner. This film, despite having a few problems behind the scenes, really nails the look and feel of its source material. This is not a rehash of '95s Sylvester Stallone too-campy-for-its-own-good flick, but a bloody, stylized action film perfect for audiences looking to have a lawfully good time.
