Favourite David Cronenberg movie so far. Favourite horror movie maybe?
Although Cronenberg disputes the notion of being considered 'prophetic', I think it's impossible not to acknowledge the parallels between this vision of television broadcasting/home video and the evolution of social media and the internet in general. For a film about Betamax tapes and TV signals produced in a climate of hostility and moral panic regarding 'video nasties', it has aged incredibly well.
Everything that is great about Cronenberg shines in this film. Grotesque, pulsating physical effects courtesy of Rick Baker; an intriguing and convincing yet detached view of sexual deviance; and a fascinating concept exploring the infection and corruption of humans from both external and internal threats.
