I find these these live action Buena Vista/cinema du cake falls on a stuffy lady to be charming but the belabored set up and pacing make this a bit of a chore. Nearly 20 minutes of two identical kids who see each other but have no curiosity about a stranger who looks exactly like them? I’m not insisting on verisimilitude for something like this, but I need some kind of plausibility. Are these just the two least curious girls who ever lived? Otherwise perfectly lovely children’s power fantasy. Perfect for over 7 under 10.

Elevated by its exceptional soundtrack and a performance by the late Tupac Shakur that goes much harder and more intense than the fairly boiler plate plot requires. ABOVE THE RIM works but the only surprising thing about it is the film’s desire for a happy ending despite some obvious obstacles that might impede that. The street material feels much stronger than the basketball scenes which don’t feel especially well choreographed. I understand why this worked in the 90’s but it’s basically just the fusion of an after school special with ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES relocated to street courts.

Its incredibly satisfying to watch an early work from a filmmaker you admire and see all the themes and signatures that are present in their work right there in their infancy. Such is the case with Bong's fun series of shorts that link up thematically and then eventually narratively. On display is his ability to quickly pivot in tone, his dynamic action and his skill at finding moments of absurd comedy in what otherwise would be unbearable tension.
