Back when films still had a sense of humor; only these could sound the alarm for the culture today, which has become sci-fi. The social critique is a rare genre of film, and John Carpenter demonstrates a cutting edge, as well as the finale of a career winning streak in the 80s.
OBEY. CONSUME. DON'T QUESTION AUTHORITY. The messages could not be more cloying. You don't necessarily need magic glasses to see this is the world of advertising we're actually living in. How many aliens can you spot?
But the film wisely never takes itself too seriously. The cheesy action movie tropes are on full display. I'm not gonna quote. Just see this movie if you haven't already.
