Coming off Tales of Earthsea, this was refreshing. When Lisa takes Sosuke for ice cream to cheer him up after losing Ponyo, there’s a couple seconds spent on them walking to the car where Sosuke slows his pace and then realizes he’s falling behind and has to basically jog to keep up with his mother’s long steps. Another moment when Ponyo gives a cup to a mother holding a baby and the baby starts teething on the cup handle only to immediately fuss when it’s pulled away. The little details like that make all the difference.
