Two 5 Star Films in a Row??

This might be the best piece of movie writing I've ever seen. To create a patchwork of 24 completely lived-in, compelling characters and use them as a backdrop to reflect the culture of Music City, of the South, of post-Vietnam War America, all over the course of a few days and all while giving almost more credence to amazing musical performances than actual plot or story is beyond ambitious. Woof.

I was vaguely aware of Pink Flamingos' reputation. A dirty film. An exercise in perversion. A cult-like following of "Midnite Movie" watchers who could lean into the hippy, draggy camp like a kind of X-Rated Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sullivan's Travels

    ★★

Is this the first instance on film of a white guy figuring out what privilege is? Outside of a chilling musical sequence set in a church towards the end and Veronica Lake's excellent disaffection, there's not a lot to love here. The tonal shifts in Sullivan's Travels are a little disorienting and make its' attempts to explore poverty in America seem disingenuous. Ultimately, the movie itself mirrors the failings of its protagonist where sometimes it's just better to stick to comedy.
