Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

    ★★★★

I had zero expectations for this movie and yet it absolutely wowed me. For a long time Marvel stuck to formula but they’ve taken some calculated risks lately and it has paid off. I don’t know if I’d even call Shang Chi a superhero movie. It’s very much a martial arts fantasy film. But it’s also kind of a soap opera. Don't Breathe 2

    ★★★

2016’s Don’t Breathe was one of the surprise delights of its decade. Now comes a random sequel that attempts to turn that film’s villain into a good guy. And it’s — actually pretty good. It doesn’t quite replicate its predecessor’s “high concept” and shocking twists. It’s pretty straightforward but it does its job very well. If you don’t mind going out to a theatre, this will make a fun night out with your friends or a date. It’s a slightly gory revenge flick with good thrills.

The whole movie comes across as sappy and unrealistic, and every bad decision by the characters…

    Pearl Harbor

During the 4th of July weekend in the year 2000, I saw the first teaser trailer for Pearl Harbor during a packed screening of the George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg classic, The Perfect Storm. It showed the citizens of Hawaii staring into the sky as Japanese planes flew towards Pearl Harbor. And all that could be heard was dramatic music and a speech by FDR. When it was over, everyone turned to each other and said, "wow! That's gonna be…
