  • Crude Oil

    Crude Oil

    (2a)

    has more of a solidified "arc" of sorts than the first two parts. there's before work, work, and then after work. this one is the closest to outlining a full day in the life of the worker, so it's lighter on the extreme length front though it's still pretty obviously trying stuff. it's funny how much of this is a "dudes bein guys" movie but i digress. wish i could watch shitty kung fu movies with them at the…

    Crude Oil

    (1b)

    and now there's no breakroom and we're at work. something this immediately reminded me of with the long landscape shots was colonization of other planets and how it's typically touted as a glamorous possibility under the vague gesture of "science" when in reality any material gains made from it will be as dour as the ones shown across the three hours of workers performing the same menial tasks over and over again. no narration or dialogue, like an even…

    Crude Oil

    ends up being more emotionally up and down than i was expecting. the periods of rowdiness and roughhousing makes me wonder if this camaraderie will be continued, but after certain workers leave, there are massive stretches where the others just sit there, unable to sleep or mouth off or entertain themselves or do much of anything. and when they do get the break at the end, it's cathartic but soul-crushingly melancholy.

    kind of weird that my patience for things where there's literally nothing happening is so much better than my patience for films with some sort of minimal action. oh well. onto part 1b.

  • La Flor

    La Flor

    story 1, 2, and most of 3 done

    quick notes::

    surprisingly funny! llinas has a great sense of humor in this so far
    first two stories are way more genre-y than i had imagined which plays well, making the whole work more free-form and lighthearted than just 15 hours of dramas
    the writing in this + Extraordinary Stories seems so like, easy to fuck up, and yet it all is just perfect shit. it's somewhere along the lines of the…
