i sat on this one for way too long - it's really great! i had no idea the structure of it was going to be the way it was, but the fact that it tries to remain objective while having moments of silliness and camp is extremely well done. costumes and cinematography are lit as well. i do think it is a touch long for this type of endeavor but i don't reasonably know what you would cut... anywho definitely check it out if you haven't yet.

lovely apocalyptic slimecore; heavily enhanced by its score and a little hurt by its weirdly slow editing at inopportune times, whole thing is an experience to say the least. this also has a lot of (i assume entirely coincidental) similarities to Lifeforce by hooper as far as plot goes. nothing to really add on to with that comparison, would just make a fun double viewing probably... great stuff!

  • Letters Home

seeing this as a pretty obvious biographical document for chantal and her own mother is extremely touching, that woman really loved her mom. but then knowing how akerman's life would end ends up making this retroactively tragic.

  • Raise the Red Lantern

there's a lot here that seems to have influenced the aesthetics of Dawn Breaking which was cool and unexpected. i also saw that hou produced this which 100% tracks - i'm really not a fan of his but this is like a good version of what his films are lol. zhang yimou is great! still find it hilarious he made Keep Cool after this lol

not my favorite breillat by any means but it's still very easy to appreciate. i think it's kind of funny how genuinely edgy and daring her stuff is and i don't even really mean it necessarily in a cinematic way i mean it in an unironic anti-PC way lmao. but hey if anyone can make flicks like this i have to assume it's the insane french lady CB herself.

  • Cube

pretty great chamber horror! i love that it ends up about prime /power/ factorization, something that's extremely specific even for a savant - like i could see prime factorization but they go a step further. the math in this is all generally good lol. fun shit 4sure

beautiful to behold and i like these sort of mythos mullings when they're trimmed to featurette length a lot. definitely a duo to watch out for, between this and In Vitro.

i love the concept and it kinda reminded me of how people are using soundcloud footage of gaza vs tel aviv to similar effects today. free palestine!!

horrendously depressing how much of this is basically identical to what's happening now, down to inflections used in testimonies. fuck dude
