there are like 4 movies here and 3 of them are really good. i haven't seen too much queer cinema but maureen is probably the single most trans-coded character ive ever seen lol

  • Godzilla

    Godzilla

    ★★★★

makes itself pretty obvious but fun to interpret, to the extent of where there is not particularly much for me to say about it on first viewing. pretty excellent weaving of every element, operates as a procedural scifi and the pretext to disaster flicks and greater scifi horror tropes.

  • The Chess Game of the Wind

The Chess Game of the Wind

    ★★★½

undeniably beautiful, though the atmosphere is something i more appreciate than actually engage with (gothic films tend to do that to me). scratches a visconti itch though which is a bit rare

was digging this as a kind of typical comfy late career MDO and then the last 5 minutes happened lmao

A Bride for Rip Van Winkle

    ★★★★½

    4 hour miniseries version

this actually ends up reminding me a lot of Love Exposure by virtue of its length, generally unpredictable structure (as opposed to an unpredictable narrative), and focus on connection as the zenith of relationships above all else. but it also in turn reminds me of rivette in displaying how much performance shapes who we are as individuals, similar to how language shapes our thoughts as opposed to vice versa. and thirdly, i am reminded of Pulse,…

  • Death and the Compass

    Death and the Compass

    ★★★½

i love that for all the zaniness of this it's a like reasonably straightforward story at the end of the day

  • Blancanieves

    Blancanieves

    fun and genuine

  • Crude Oil

    ★★★★

    (2b & closing thoughts)

this section has more "dudes bein guys" than probably any of the others. it's fun seeing them chill and basically not discuss "hard" subjects like their impoverishment or the aspects of their job or anything and just play some cards and watch some movies. i think that this manages to give a cohesive picture of who these workers are - they are, by turns, class conscious, intelligent about their surroundings, hard working, and down to earth in…

  • Apple Pie

    Apple Pie

    ★★★

perplexed by the euphoria surrounding this! idk it's cute and i like how it's a mishmash of other a-g forms and it meshes like 70s sensibilities with some 2010s ones but at the same time since it's changing around so fast it's difficult for me to really get settled in to any one mood. i found the usage of scifi to have a similar impact - cool in idea but ends up scattered in execution.
